Bio:

Jehan was born in Normandy in 1192 to the illicit mistress of a rising priest in the Church, who obviously kept the whole thing a secret. His mother died in childbirth, causing his father, Guibert of Caen, to feel that God had repaid his sin with just punishment. Nonetheless, Guibert felt somewhat responsible for his only child and paid a well-off household to wetnurse him before placing him as a boy in a monastery as a “foundling”. The intention was to give the lad a good education and perhaps have him sent to one of the universities and enter law or medicine — Guibert felt that such a child of sin was unfit for the higher studies of theology or the clergy and it was obviously early on that Jehan talents were of the mind and not the body.

Jehan had a difficult time in the monastery as soon as puberty hit; the animals shunned him and strange accidents seemed to occur around him. The monks whispered that he was “fey,” “bad luck,” or even “devilspawned.” Two events radically changed his life forever at a young age. Guibert died in an riding accident on the road (although Jehan had almost no direct contact with his father, his father’s agents would visit and pay off the monks — they confided that it was likely no accident and the result of a rivalry for an important clerical position). This meant the money ran out and the monks had little desire to keep caring for such an ill-omened youngster. The second event was that a well-educated traveler from Eastern Europe, who had periodically visited the monastery for years and had taken an unusual interest in the lad, offered Jehan a new opportunity…
